10 Top Landscaping Trends for 2020

As the weather starts to warm and the outdoor living season begins, those of us at DiSabatino Landscaping are using this time to connect with our clientele to see if they have any needs we can fill for them. This growing season presents unique challenges as communities across the nation fighting the spread of COVID-19 are social distancing and working from home. Not to mention the kids home 24/7.

Thankfully, the landscape industry is considered an essential business and we are busier than ever preparing to install some impressive outdoor living spaces. Our landscape designers are adapting to the current climate by video conferencing with clients, supplying detailed 3-D renderings and virtual designs that can easily take a project from the design stage to full implementation.

With so many families finding themselves quarantined at home, there is a sudden desire to create outdoor living areas to extend their home’s square footage. If you are considering investing in a ‘staycation’ project this year, consider some of this year’s latest hardscaping and landscaping trends.

Top Landscaping Trends for 2020:

1) Fire features: Whether it is a tradition wood burning fire pit, a tabletop fire bowl or a full brick fireplace, fire features are considered a must in today’s outdoor living spaces. Not only does this add ambiance or a central focal point, it extends the use of outdoor spaces to cooler temperatures.

2) Intricate geometric hardscaping patterns: The latest interior design patterns are starting to emerge into the outdoors — even walkways can now have flair. Geometric shapes, like trapezoids, the chevron pattern (a repeating V) or hexagons now adorn patios, raised beds, benches and stairways.

3) Textured elements: Whether through pillows, textiles, rugs or even faux rug inlays, textured materials are adding big statements to outdoor living areas.

4) Outdoor living rooms: In today’s world, connecting with nature is a great stress reliever. That is why many families are moving to the outdoors to share meals, exercise and even relax after a long day. A living area covered by a pavilion, gazebo or pergola is a perfect way to make your outdoor living space livable.

7Ways to Add Value to Your Outdoor Kitchen

5) Water features: The sound of water is relaxing. It can bring you to a meditative state. In a world full of a cacophony of sounds, a simple water feature, such as a waterfall, pond or fountain can be the de-stressor you never knew you needed!

6) Front porch living: The return to sitting on the front porch on warm summer evenings started trending last year and is expected to continue throughout this one. Homes with square footage at a minimum can maximize outdoor living space by creating a functional gathering space. Using a mixture of materials, such as hardscaped walls that double as planters, pavers to provide a pathway to the front door and plantings will add great curb appeal to any property.

17Outdoor Living Spaces that Will Make You Feel Like a Lucky Irishman

7) Smart irrigation, controlled remotely via smartphone app: Smart tech is now escaping the walls of the home to make outdoor living easier to maintain. Why not? With the simple touch of a button, homeowners can control their irrigation system to provide their landscapes the right amount of water at the right time of day. This saves time, energy and water … it’s a win/win!

8) Blue accents: Whether through plantings, sculptures, textiles or water features, shades of blue are being used to accent outdoor living spaces. In gardens, blue fortune, delphinium, hydrangea, hyacinth, and globe thistle are adding rich highlights.

TheBest Summer Blooming Shrubs

9) Low-water landscaping: Climate change is front and central nowadays and the idea of dumping gallons of water onto lawns each season is starting to make no sense to many homeowners. Ornamental lawns are the single most irrigated ‘crop’ in the Unites States … a crop that feeds no one. This has spurred on a search for better alternatives, such as landscapes that require minimal amount of watering.

10) Mainstream Sustainability: “Low-maintenance gardens, drought-tolerant plants and less turfgrass have become the norm in landscape design. Homeowners now assume sustainable design will be a major part of the plan — both for economic and environmental reasons.” ~ HGTV

Preparing Your Patio for Spring

Punxsutawney Phil has predicted an early spring, which means it is time to get busy preparing your patio for spring. Don’t miss enjoying the first warm days by dining al fresco because you are late to the party!

CHECK OUT THREE WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR PATIO PATIO FOR SPRING:

1 ) Check patio for any signs of damage from ice: Winter is rough on your hardscaping. When water seeps into cracks or crevices and freezes, it can cause cracks or worse! Early spring is the time to assess any damage done from freeze/thaw cycle.

Not only do cracks or chipped areas on concrete unsightly, they could get worse if not repaired. The solution to repairing these surfaces vary. Check out this Quickrete® Guide on Repairing Concrete.

2) Remove algae or mildew: The process of ridding a patio of mildew and algae will depend on the severity of the stains. Start with a stiff broom to sweep off as much debris as possible. While using a power washer is less caustic, it often does not work on stubborn stains.

Using bleach or vinegar is effective, but it could damage the lawn and landscaping. Baking soda is more natural and gentler solution – try mixing ½ cup baking soda to one gallon of water and 1/8 cup of liquid dish detergent first. Spray it on the patio surface, let it sit for 30 minutes, then scrub and rinse.

If your patio is in the shade a good part of the day, consider pruning or removing some trees to allow more sunlight to reach your patio.

3) Apply a sealant: Your patio should be sealed every 3-5 years, at minimum. Sealants prolong the life of your patio.

Sealers provide a tough, water-resistant finish that is protects your patio from exposure to water, common acids, alkalies, petroleum, solvents, oils, greases, and salts. Call a professional hardscape specialist to have sealer applied.

how to winterize your pond

Watch Our How to Winterize Your Pond Video

Winterizing your pond begins in the fall, as water temperature is a big factor in determining when is the right time to begin the winterization process for ponds and other water features.

Tips to Winterize Ponds

DiSabatino Landscaping of Delaware helps homeowners to properly take care of their hardscaping and landscaping investment. That is why we suggest that you complete the following steps to prepare ponds and other water features for the winter months ahead.

How to Winterize Living Ponds & Other Water Features:

  • Debris Control: Clean out all debris, leaves and silt from the bottom of your pond. The cleaner you can get the pond before freezing weather comes, the healthier your pond will be throughout the winter. Ponds need to be covered with netting in the fall. This netting should be well above the surface so leaves can be easily cleaned. Use a fine-weave aquarium net to sift out excess sludge and debris.
  • Water Change: A water change can be done anytime, but it is much more comfortable if it’s done before the water reaches 60◦ Remember to use dechlorinator if your water contains chlorine.
  • De-Icer: Use a de-icer to keep a section of your pond open to allow oxygenation and gas exchange. This does not warm the overall water temperature of your pond. A de-icer simply allows toxic gasses to be released and oxygen to enter the pond.
  • Pump Care: When temperatures drop below 40°F, the main pump should be removed and filters thoroughly cleaned. Do not leave the pump running on the bottom of the pond. It will lower the temperature of the entire pond by disrupting the natural thermal layers of the pond water as well as adding extreme stress on pond fish.
  • Plant Care: Trim and remove any dying plant material as it appears to avoid debris build-up. In this area, bring inside all tropical plants and set all hardy water lilies to the bottom, if the pond is deep enough to keep them from freezing to the bottom.
  • Fish Care: Depending on the water temperature will determine what food you feed you fish. Cooler temperatures make it harder for fish to digest food properly. Though it is important for fish to bulk up during the winter months, it is imperative that they not be overfed. As this is a complicated topic, here are more intricate instructions on fish care.

“We take care of everyone. We’ve built a community room where members of our team can hang out, relax, grab a coffee and prepare for their day. There is also a well-stocked machine with safety gear and tools.

We like to promote contests for our team. There’s a “safety bingo pool” for the longest stretch of accident and injury-free days. Team members are rewarded based on a pool that increases daily. How to Clean and Seal Your Stone Patio

Stone Patio Maintenance Tips You Need to Read Before Summer

How to Clean and Seal Your Stone Patio

Installing a stone patio can add value to your home as well as beauty to your outdoor landscaping. Stone is much lower maintenance than wooden decking and can add more visual interest than concrete, all while providing you a place to barbecue or simply relax away from the heat of the day. While low maintenance, there is some work to do to ensure your patio stays beautiful and functional for years to come.

Cleaning Your Stone Patio

Because your stone patio is susceptible to everyday dirt and natural grime, it is important to clean it periodically.

  • Keeping your patio free of loose dirt and plant debris can help prevent scuffing and buildup. Remove all patio furniture and potted plants before sweeping the entire patio in one direction, then the opposite. This method ensures you remove any material trapped between the stones.
  • Use clean water from a hose to spray surface dirt and dried-on debris from your patio. If necessary, use a stiff brush to loosen any resistant patches, and repeat spraying to wash away residue.
  • Greasy stains near patio tables, grills, and barbecue areas can be treated with a solution of dish soap and water. Use a stiff brush to work the solution into the stain and rinse away with a hose. If there is remaining residue, clear the area of the soap solution and treat with an ammonia solution – ½ cup to one gallon of warm water. Ensure to rinse all the ammonia solution away before proceeding.
  • Treat any biological stains, such as mold and mildew, with a solution of ½ cup of bleach to one gallon of warm water. Scrub the affected areas with a stiff brush and remove any excess solution with rags or towels before rinsing with a hose. Allow stone to dry adequately before replacing furniture and plants.

Which Material is Best for Your Perfect Patio?

Sealing Your Stone Patio

Most stone patios should be sealed to prevent water stains and excess absorption of grease or biological stains. After you’ve thoroughly cleaned your patio, wait at least one day to allow your stone to fully dry before proceeding to seal.

  • Use an acrylic, water-based matte sealer designed for porous outdoor stone.
  • Choose a hot, dry day to ensure rapid drying of your stone.
  • Ensure your area is free of loose dirt, clean, and dry by following the steps outlined above.
  • Using a clean paint roller, roll the sealant on in large, generous strokes. Roll over each stone only once to avoid streaking.
  • Allow the sealer to dry for one hour – it should be dry to the touch before reapplying.
  • Repeat with another coat.
  • Allow the sealer to dry for 48 hours before walking on the surface or replacing patio furniture.

Winter Landscape and Gardening Tips

Winter Landscaping & Gardening Tips

2019 is almost here. It’s time to reflect on the year gone by, as well as plan for the one ahead. There are plenty of things we can do in the Winter to keep up progress in our outdoor spaces. Here are some ideas for your consideration.

Winter Landscaping & Gardening Tips:

1) Pruning: After deciduous trees and shrubs drop their leaves we can shape them easier. A couple of dry, mild days and some clean, sharp tools is all you need to tighten up shapes in your landscape.

Why Late Winter is the Best Time to Prune

2) Hardscape: Patios, walkways, and outdoor lighting can all be done well into the Winter with some careful consideration. A fire pit or other fire accents can add to family gatherings and holiday memories.

Preparing Your Patio for Winter

3) Planting: Winter is still a great time to add trees and bling like roses to your property. That way they’ll be ready right from the start for Spring 2019. Often times there are fantastic discounts on landscape material at this time of year.

4 Benefits of Planting ‘Winter Interest’ Plants

Most of all enjoy time with your family and the satisfaction of your hard garden work in 2018. Have a Happy New Year friends!

HOW TO WINTERIZE PONDS AND OTHER WATER FEATURES

Winter Gardening Tips – Sunday Gardener

“The advice to clear snow from shrubs is good, sound, practical advice. In earlier years I have ignored it, thinking this advice was over complicating things when you could just stay indoors in the warm, but snow really does cause damages to the garden, especially shrubs.”

How to Maintain Your Hardscaping & Masonry

Generally concrete is low maintenance, but here are a few things you can do to keep your hardscaping looking its best. At least once a year, you should scrub down surfaces with a mild bleach cleanser. We don’t recommend power washing because it can cause permanent damage and can void your warranty.

Any moss, mold, mildew or algae stains can be removed with a solution like ‘Wet & Forget’. Never use metal shovels or tools to remove snow or ice. If you’re using a snow blower, make sure you use rubber blades. Never use deicers of any kind. They can cause permanent damage from pitting to cracking.

Patio Care Tips From DiSabatino Landscaping

Quality hardscaping and masonry will include a durable sealer, but staining can occur from rusting metal, flower pots, grease from grills, food and drink or oil and gas. Keep gutters, down spots and drains clear because water can cause sediment and erosion voiding your warranty.

So as you can see hardscaping and masonry don’t require a lot of maintenance. Just a little bit of effort keeps it looking good for a long time.
