How to Know It’s Time for a Renovation Project
Share:
There are many reasons why you may need more space or a better layout of your home. You may have bought a ranch home on a one-acre lot with plans to live there forever, but you and your spouse just learned you’re having twins. Your parents are getting older and need around-the-clock care, and it makes more sense to have them close by. Or maybe you just can’t host one more Thanksgiving in your galley kitchen?
The following changes could help you decide it may be time for a home renovation:
The Makeup of Your Family
The use of your home adapts over time. Your family may be growing with a new baby or decreasing as grown children leave the nest. In-law suites are becoming more popular to meet the needs of inter-generational families. People who want to remain in their homes for the rest of their lives may want to add a primary suite or full bathroom on the first floor.
Energy Efficiency
If the heating or cooling bills have suddenly spiked, it could be a sign your windows are leaking. After 15 years, most windows and doors need to be replaced. Consider this an opportunity to incorporate a new home remodel project as well. Your home layout might function better by moving a side entrance or relocating a patio door.
Unnecessary Clutter
Are your cabinets and countertops overflowing? Do you have clothes and personal items all over your home? Is there not enough space in your garage for all your items? These are signs that your home may need more storage. Consider adding a mudroom for a designated area to hang your things. A bathroom or kitchen renovation can add storage with additional cabinets, a butler’s pantry or wet bar.
Inefficient Layout
Many older homes have large living and dining rooms but smaller kitchens that don’t fit the needs of homeowners, who often use the room for hosting friends and family. If you want to update and enhance your space without requiring a major move to another area, consider redesigning your layout. Take space from the dining area to make your kitchen larger or bump out into the garage. There are many ways an experienced designer can show you how to maximize space.
Work Changes
After the COVID pandemic, many companies pivoted so their employees could work from home. This trend has continued even now, with a large number of workers deciding to work from a home office a few days a week. If you need extra office space or a designated quiet area for calls, consider a home remodeling project.
Bear in mind that projects don’t always run smoothly. Supply chain delays, outdated electrical, and construction surprises can always happen. Make sure you build in delays to the construction timeline and are upfront with your contractor about when you’re hoping the project is completed.
Home renovations projects are well worth it, though.
They vastly enhance the value, style, and enjoyment of your home for years to come.
