Why Gunite Pools Are the Best Choice to Upgrade Your Outdoor Living Space

Gunite Pools Are the Best Choice for an In-ground Pool Installation

Gunite pools add value for a lifetime within any home for those thinking of installing an inground pool to their outdoor living area, . The superb look and design versatility will be a lasting upgrade to your property.

Gunite pools are extremely durable, stand up to all types of climate and can be style in a variety of free flowing shapes tailored to the landscape’s configuration. This gives a full spectrum of options for a pool design. A gunite pool can be installed anywhere, no matter the terrain.

Gunite is Versatile

A gunite pool can have full curves, square angled corners or a combination of both. A pool can begin at beach entry level and graduate to any depth desired when made with gunite. Most commercial and many residential pools are gunite. This is because gunite pools are built to last.

What is a Gunite Pool?

Gunite is a concrete blend of cement, sand and water that applied through a high-pressure hose to a structure fabricated of rebar. Once dry, gunite becomes a rock hard solid structure with a thickness that adds a tensile strength a fiberglass or vinyl liner pool will never come close to matching.

Adding Style to Match Your Taste

Once the gunite cures, a plaster application made from cement and marble becomes the final waterproof coating. Some opt for a colored quartz aggregate added to the plaster in order to increase durability and aesthetics.

Create contrast – add a pebbled or tiled finish to create a high-end look. Waterfalls, custom stairs, adjoining hot tub or spa added to the gunite pool design can meet the desired look.

Why Gunite?

A gunite pool adds the most value and durability when it comes to in-ground pools. The gunite shell handles all types of conditions due to its ability to contract and expand. No matter the soil changes that occur from season or climate, such as freezing and thawing, a gunite pool is best suited to endure.

The resilience and versatility of a gunite pool makes for a custom pool with free flowing shapes tailored to your backyard a reality.  Whether you are looking to incorporate a trickling spillway, rock waterfall, fountain shelf or elevated spa, a gunite pool makes it easy.

SLATE PATIO

Should I Use Natural Stone, Decorative Concrete or Pavers for a New Patio Installation?

If you are considering installing a new deck or patio installation, you will want to explore your options. Natural Stone, Decorative Concrete or Pavers are some of the top options of types of material available to create you outdoor living area. All have benefits and drawbacks. Some are more expensive, but last longer. While others are lower maintenance and easier to install.

Before starting a hardscaping project, it is wise to research the various options and materials available. Consider  materials that are safe and blend or contrast nicely with your home and surrounding landscape.

When choosing your material, educate yourself on its longevity, aesthetics, install method, maintenance, and cost.  An experience hardscaping contractor will be able access your unique needs and help you make the choices as clear and simple as possible:

NATURAL STONE

Natural stones, such as flagstone or slate are rich looking, attractive material that holds up well to the elements.  Natural stone holds color  better than most manufactured products and has a unique appeal.  Slate and flagstone offers a classic or rustic aesthetic that would probably be well-suited to an older or traditionally styled home.  It can be installed both with cement and polymeric sand joints.  Versatility and looks make this material a great selection for any property.

Natural stone typically costs more because it has to be trucked in from a quarry. It can also take more time and effort to install, increasing labor cost.

CONCRETE PAVERS

Concrete Pavers have a more modern look  and offer a more uniform pattern and coloring.  They are typical lest costly than natural stone, yet still offer a similar aesthetic.  There are a vast number of shapes, sizes, and colors available.  Do your research when selecting pavers as not all manufacturers offer the same quality.

Installing concrete pavers are simpler that natural stone because of their uniformity & therefore are more wallet friendly.  This does not come without drawbacks however.  You will need to be more mindful in terms of maintenance if you want your patio to keep its original luster if you choose this material.  Polymeric sand joints need repaired every 3-5 years so that weeds do not grow in, and sealers can help to reduce the fading that occurs over time.

DECORATIVE CONCRETE

DiSabatino Landscaping Designs Beautiful Patios with Pergolas

Decorative Concrete is an old concept that has benefited from new install techniques in the past couple of decades.  Options range from brushed finish (typical sidewalks) and exposed aggregate (tiny pebbles) to stamped concrete with synthetic designs printed onto them.

If you want a traditional or authentic feel, this look may not be for you.  One big benefit of decorative concrete is its durability and cost effectiveness. This  option does not need as much maintenance as the other two options listed here.

3 Ways to Prepare Your Patio for Spring

At the end of the day, your patio must fit your style preferences and needs.  No matter the type of material or method you decide on, be sure to have a reputable installer assist you with the process.

Five Tips You Should Know About Spring Fertilization

What You Need to Know About Spring Fertilization

Spring Fertilization is Best Applied After the Last Frost

When considering spring fertilization, many take a “more is better” approach. However, the way you apply spring fertilizer could make or break the difference in your plant growth come summer. Make sure you are following these guidelines for safe, effective fertilization.

1) Apply a Little Later in Spring

Fertilizing once in spring, twice during the growing season is a solid rule. However, don’t jump the gun and fertilize too early in the spring. Fertilizing too early runs the risk of unexpected snow or a late freeze, which can harm new growth in plants. It is best to wait until after the last frost for application.

2) Follow Application Instructions

Follow the suggested application instructions and avoid overdoing it. Too much fertilizer can result in excessive nitrogen. Start with the recommended amount and apply more in the summer if necessary. Over a few seasons, you should get a feel for the right amount of fertilizer that leads to healthy plant growth.

3) Consider a Five-Step Fertilizer Plan

Some experts recommend fertilizing every six to eight weeks after your first feeding. If you keep your first feeding a little later in spring, you will be fertilizing through October and into November. That is just fine for this area. To be honest, fall  fertilizing is more important than the spring.

4) Time Your Fertilization with Forecasted Moderate Rain

Watering about ¼ inch along with fertilizer will provide optimum benefits. Timing fertilization to coincide with a moderate rain will make it easier and avoid using precious resources. Be sure not fertilize before a predicted heavy storm as much of the fertilizer will wash away before it has the chance to work.

5) Weed Killer Treatments May Have Fertilizers Added

Early herbicides aimed at controlling weed growth often contain fertilizer as well, to combat the herbicide’s negative effects on your garden. Be aware of what you are applying so that you do not over fertilize.

One important tip is to avoid over-fertilizing too early. If you do, your garden will not stay beautiful through the growing season. Seeking help from a lawn care professional will provide accurate answers to plant fertilizing questions in your area. For information about garden maintenance and fertilization services, contact DiSabatino Landscaping today.

Spring Pruning Tips to Keep Your Landscaping Looking Fresh

Rejuvenate Your Plantings With Spring Pruning

What is Spring Pruning?**

As the temperatures rise, your landscaping begins to blossom and green up, we thought sharing a few of our spring ‘must do’ spring pruning knowledge might be helpful.

Do You Have Questions?

  1. What plants in your landscape need spring pruning?
  2. How  do you go about spring pruning?
  3. How spring pruning beneficial?

We have answers! Read on for a quick guide and the answers to these questions.

Why Is Spring Pruning Beneficial?

Proper pruning can remove dead or diseased branches, as well as shape shrubs, bushes, and trees into more aesthetically pleasing forms. Some plants flower only on new growth, so pruning these plants promotes blooming and keeps overgrowth to a minimum. Other plants simply respond better to pruning during the dormant period of early spring, allowing stored nutrients to reach the actively growing parts of the plant.

rejuvenative pruning

What is Rejuvenative Pruning?

Spring pruning is advantageous in that it allows you to properly assess a plant’s shape without blooms and new growth so there are fewer obstructions to determining the plant’s final shape. Pruning in early spring also allows the wounds created by the cuts you’ve made to seal properly before the rapid growth to come with warmer days.

Trees

With many trees, such as birches, maples, oaks, elms and crab apples, you should only prune during the winter months, to prevent pests and diseases from accessing fresh cuts, or to prevent excess sap from bleeding out. Prune spring flowering trees, such as dogwoods, only after flowering. You can prune dogwoods down to only a few branches each year.

Evergreens

Both needled and broadleaf evergreens can benefit from spring pruning. Focus on the desired shape of the shrub and trim to fit. Remove overgrown new growth, dead, and unwanted branches, but avoid cutting into old wood since it may not sprout again.

Summer Flowering Plants

Spring is an ideal time to prune shrubs and vines that do not flower in spring, such as crepe myrtle, butterfly bush, and Pee Gee hydrangea, but you must prune before the plant pushes out new growth. Trim to the desired shape and remove excess growth and thickness.

Spring Flowering Plants

Do not prune plants that flower in spring, such as lilacs, most roses, forsythia, most hydrangeas, and rhododendrons, until after they’ve flowered in late spring. Since they bear blooms on wood formed the previous year, prune right after blooming to prevent removing the new growth that will produce blooms next year.

DiSabatino Landscaping Under Deck Patio

Why Build A Patio Under Your Deck?

Spring is on the horizon and winter is slowly fading away. Many of us are chomping at the bit to get fresh air and enjoy the great outdoors. There is no better way to invigorate your soul than to soak in the warm rays of the sun with a soft warm breeze gently sending wafts of spring scents your way.

With how wet this past winter has been and the last dump of snow dosing our hopes for an early spring, outdoor living might not be front and foremost in our minds. It should be. In fact, optimizing your outdoor living space by adding an outdoor living area under a raised or second story deck is a great use of space.

5 Reasons to Add a Patio Under a Second Story Deck:

1) Increase Square Footage:

If your home is not large enough to entertain large crowds, building an outdoor living area under a raised deck is a great way to extend your home’s square footage and create a space that can be used year round.

2) Double Your Outdoor Entertainment Space:

An under deck patio gives you a second area to relax and enjoy nature at the ground level.

3) Gives You Cover:

Under the deck patios offer you protection from the elements, allowing for bringing some of the indoors outside, such as entertainment centers, fully stock outdoor kitchens and/or bars, fireplaces and more.

4) Better Functionality:

Because you can safely bring traditional indoor elements outside, thanks to the cover the second story deck provides, your outdoor living area provides better functionality. You can easily entertain outdoors without having to drag a bunch of things outside, because it is already there.

5) Extended Hours:

It is easy to create a patio with all the features such as lighting, heating and cooking capabilities that allows for extended entertaining into evenings, no matter what time of year it is.

A bit of advice is to determine what features you patio design should include by figuring out with what matters most to you. How do you plan to use your patio? How important is low maintenance? What specific features do you definitely have to have?

DiSabatino Landscaping design experts can help you determine all the answers to these questions and help you build a beautifully customized below deck patio that will fulfill your wildest dreams.

How Proper Drainage Benefits Your Landscaping

Some homeowners might not realize the role that proper drainage plays in a healthy landscape. Drainage is just as important as irrigation system, if not more so. Excessive rainfall, soil erosion and flooding cause further problems when there is not proper drainage.

Pooling water can damage trees, flowers and plants by allowing disease to set in and insect manifestations. There is also damage to a home’s foundation to consider. That is why proper drainage is so important.

DiSabatino Landscaping suggest that property owner consider strategically placing piping and drains to protect your landscaping, hardscaping and foundation.

Spending a modest amount of money to protect your property just make good business sense. For a foundation constantly subjected to flooding, the cost of cleanup, replacement and repair far outweigh the cost of an effective drainage system.

Now is a good time to have your property’s drainage system reviewed and maintained before the spring showers arrive. DiSabatino Landscaping can help you determine the best course of action for all your drainage needs.

Our specialists have been solving drainage problems for over 20 years. They can quickly evaluate the grade of your property and identify problem areas. We determine the most effective solution for your drainage issues.

DiSabatino Landscaping can ensure that your foundation and landscaping is protected from the heavy rains and prolonged wet periods ahead. Give DiSabatino Landscaping a call today. Our team will help you make all the right choices for your drainage problems

All Season Sunrooms are a Perfect Home Addition

Four season sunrooms or all season sunrooms are a great way to bring the outdoors in all year round. They help you enjoy the benefits of natural light, which clinical studies show to improve physical and emotional well-being.

Sunrooms add space and utility to any home. All season rooms are likely to become one of the more popular spots for entertaining or relaxing. The thin veil between the outdoors and indoors make them a perfect location to grow herbs and prized plantings.

Sunrooms are a perfect option for homeowners that are looking to add a space offering that offers a variety of functionality. For example, a perfect breakfast nook use to start the day off right. Especially when the sun is shining.

All season sunrooms can double up on usability. They can be an office during working hours and a gathering space during the evening hours. A great spot for cocktail hour or casual dining.

Sunrooms can serve as craft room or playroom to keep the clutter and chaos away from the main areas of your home.

If your square footage is limited, a sunroom with privacy blinds, could serve as a temporary guest room.

Adding a four season room to your home allows you to bring all the best elements of the outdoors inside the home and leave the worst outside. Unlike a three season sunroom, an all season room can be used year-round.

Do not be fooled by the name ‘sunroom’. This space can be used all year long and with any weather conditions. DiSabatino Landscaping can design a room that caters to all of your needs, and then some!

Winter Landscape Lighting

How to Use Outdoor Landscape Lighting to Brighten Winter Nights

As the brisk weather and shorter daylights start encroaching this winter, do not let dark winter nights dampen your spirit. Outdoor landscape lighting can help. Sure, the month of December is full of bright seasonal lighting that brings about holiday cheer. However, those lights soon disappears after the New Year.

Low levels of natural light during the winter contribute to the winter blues. The remaining winter months do not have to be all doom and gloom. Not when there are varieties of subtle approaches homeowners can take to incorporate landscape lighting to lift their spirits.

Consider spotlighting, backlighting or up-lighting certain trees in your yard to add a stunning effect of shadows and silhouettes. Light reflecting off snow or water features makes for a softer ambient form of lighting. Colored lighting, such as yellows and reds, will create a coziness. While blue and purple lighting will add to a more natural lighting effect.

Do not forget to light up pathways and outdoor living areas for safety, as well as extending outdoor living into the darker hours.

Adding sources of heat and lighting will make it possible to stay cozy and warm. Use soft pillows and warm blankets to increase the comfort of guests. Play a game of charades or watch a football game while a roaring fire keeps you comfortable.

A fully stocked outdoor kitchen alleviates the need for several trips back indoors and streamlines entertaining. Be sure to install plenty of lighting to extend gatherings into the evening hours. Safely light pathways and patios to avoid falls and injuries. Some of our clients have even gone as far as installing radiant heating systems that will melt snow as it lands and keep ice from forming.

DRAINAGE FIXES TO PROTECT YOUR HOME & LANDSCAPING

How to Solve Landscape Drainage Problems

If you are experiencing an unusually soggy lawn with pooled water, there is a good chance you are suffering from landscape drainage problems. This year has brought more than our fair share of challenges to our area. Between the pandemic, the Spotted Lanternfly invasion  and unrelenting rainfall, our landscapes are saturated and mushy.

When your landscape is saturated, it can be bothersome all the way around. It is not only bad for your outdoor living; it can affect your indoor living, as well. If you property is suffering from drainage issues, it can permeate your home’s foundation and wreak havoc on your indoor environment.

Redirecting water away from your home’s foundation and using certain water management strategies can solve your drainage issues and get your property back to a healthy harmony.

Properly grading around the perimeter of your home to prevent water from seeping into the foundation is one-step towards solving landscape drainage issues. There are a number of other very effective ways to divert water to other areas of your landscape.

How to Solve Landscape Drainage Problems:

Add extensions to your downspouts: Attaching extensions to divert water from a downspout guiding water collected in gutters well away from the foundation. This will prevent water from flooding basements or sub-ground areas of the home.

Dry Well: A dry well holds water in a large hole filled with gravel allowing it to slowly soaks into the ground.

Strategically placed drainage grates and boxes: Placing surface drains with grates that keeps debris out, yet allows water flow into the box channeling to a slanted pipe allowing the water to run downhill.

Swale or French Drain:  Drainages swales are pitched areas lined with stone or grass designed to guide water off your property or to an area well away from the foundation. Whereas, a French drain is another effective way to fix drainage issues. A French drain is a perforated pipe sheathed by a fabric sock to keep dirt and sand from clogging the pipe.

Rain Garden or Barrel: A rain garden in problem locations of your property could be the solution when an underground spring or creek is the issue. Likewise, installing a water barrel or storage well below grade to capture the runoff that can be used to irrigate landscaping elsewhere.

Many drainage problems will require hiring a landscape drainage professional. A trained and experienced landscape professional knows what corrective drainage measures will work best for your specific water flow patterns. They will be able to assess the full scope of your drainage issues and create an overall design.

Please note this is not a full list of solutions to alleviate poor drainage areas. However, if you have a wet spot in your lawn or an area you are worried about please give us a call and one of our designers will find the right solution for you!

A Guide to Outdoor Fireplaces or Fire Pits

As fire pits and outdoor fireplaces start to light up the dark yards across our area to add a bit of warmth to the cool evenings. Gathering around an outdoor fire roasting marshmallows, sipping a favorite beverage  and talking about the events of the day is a favorite fall pastime of mine.

Safety should be front and center when using outdoor fire pits and fireplaces. That is why those of us a DiSabatino Landscaping thought these tips might come in handy this time of year.

7 Safety Tips for Outdoor Fireplaces or Fire Pits

1) A New Fireplace or Fire Pit Installations Needs a Little Extra Care

A newly installed fireplace or fire pits need a little bit of extra care in the beginning. We advise waiting thirty days before the first fire to let your outdoor fire pit or fireplace to cure. After thirty days, keep the fire small for the next fifteen days. Wait a full forty-five days before igniting a normal sized fire.

2) Flames at Should be kept at a Safe Height

The smaller the flame, the less likely it is the fire will get out of hand. Containing  flames inside  the fireplace or as high as the fire pit capping is always suggested. Common issues, such as back drafts or sudden gusts of wind can be hard to predict. Sparks and embers might go somewhere you do not want.

3) Avoid Using Water to Extinguish the Fire

Never use water to put out a fire with water unless it is an emergency. Bank the fire by burying flaming logs and smoldering embers with ashes. While this will not completely extinguish the fire, it  will safely cause it to die out slowly.

4) Be Sure to Use Materials With a High Heating Rating

Build your fireplace or fire pit with materials suited to stand up to high temperatures.  Don’t make the mistakes of using concrete block, stones or boulders found around the yard. These materials can crack, splinter or even explode.

5) Clean Out a Fireplace or Fire Pit After Each Use

Clean off any debris around the area. Use a clean cloth to keep the igniter and burner holes clear. Logs should be cleaned using a soft brush.

6) Check for Gas Leaks

If your fire pit or fireplace is gas run, systematically check for gas leaks. If you smell gas, turn off the gas supply. Contact your gas company for service. Have igniters and burners serviced by a gas company at least every two years.

7) Protect Your Fire Pit

Use the manufacturers cover or use one that allows moisture to escape. This will protect your fire pit from the elements and prolong its lifespan.

5 Fall Landscaping Maintenance Tips for Beginners

5 Fall Landscaping Maintenance Tips for Beginners

Autumn is a perfect time to take time and evaluate the condition of your lawn. Proper fall landscaping maintenance will not only guarantee your terrain will be ready to face harsh winter weather ahead. It will also help you reap the benefits come spring.

Our DiSabatino Landscapers and Design Specialists are always here to answer any landscaping questions you may have. If you’re a beginner, here are some tips for the best fall landscaping maintenance practices:

5 Fall Landscaping Maintenance Tips for Beginners

  1. Mulch – Plants love fall mulching because it helps protect their roots from frost and retain moisture during a cold and dry winter. Just spread 2-3 inches of fresh mulch in your garden, around trees and shrubs.
  2. Pruning If you have any perennials, you probably noticed that they begin to look a tad tired and faded in the fall. It’s time to cut them back!
  3. Tree Care – Well-cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Make sure to consult with tree experts to help evaluate possible tree hazards and remove them before winter storm season is here.
  4. Lawn Aeriation – Perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass root will help the roots grow deeply and produce a stronger, more vigorous lawn. The main reason for aerating is to alleviate soil compaction.
  5. Planting – The cooler temperatures are easier on new plantings and the soil still warm, allowing roots to grow until the ground begins to freeze. Now is a great time to plant trees, shrubs, perennials, spring blooming bulbs, cold season vegetables and turf grass.

If you are ready to take your fall landscaping to the next level, talk with one of our landscape design specialist at DiSabatino Landscaping. We can quickly and expertly install fall plantings, outdoor fire pits and even custom decks that will enhance your life for years to come.

Patio & Masonry Maintenance Tips to Add to Your Fall Chores List

This is the time of year where the clement weather entices us to the outdoors. You know that little voice encouraging you to get out and enjoy the season and to worry about indoor maintenance after the weather turns. That makes this month the perfect time to perform a few patio and masonry maintenance. Consider adding these patio & maonry tips to your fall chores list.

Concrete and masonry are typically a low maintenance surfaces that hold up well to the elements. However, there are some things that should be done once a year to keep hardscaping looking its best. For example, use a mild bleach cleanser to scrub down hard surfaces  We don’t recommend power washing because it can cause permanent damage and can void  warranties.

PROTECT YOUR HARDSCAPING

Use an approved product, such as ‘Wet & Forget’, to remove  moss, mold, mildew or algae stains. Planning to protect your hardscape for the next season of snow and icing; fit your snow blower  with rubber blades. Avoid using deicers of any kind. Never use metal shovels or tools to remove snow or ice. Any of the aforementioned can cause permanent damage, such as pitting or cracking, to your hardscape surfaces.

Patio Care Tips From DiSabatino Landscaping

Quality hardscaping and masonry will include a durable sealer, but staining can occur from rusting metal, flower pots, grease from grills, food and drink or oil and gas. Keep gutters, down spots and drains clear because water can cause sediment and erosion voiding your warranty.

So as you can see hardscaping and masonry don’t require a lot of maintenance. Just a little bit of effort keeps it looking good for a long time.

10 Ways to Bring Color to Your Fall Landscaping

10 Ways to Bring Color to Your Fall Landscaping

BEAUTIFUL FALL LANDSCAPING FOR THE BRANDYWINE VALLEY AND THE TRISTATE AREA

Our Northeast corridor location of the Brandywine Valley area offers beautiful scenery year round. At DiSabatino Landscaping, we feel that the most amazing time for viewing the brilliant foliage colors our area has to offer is in the autumn months.

Many experienced landscapers throughout our area have helped to make fall months come alive by expertly placing color-pleasing plantings to enhance properties. Planting trees that bring vivid reds, yellow and orange hues to landscaping is a great place to start beautifying your fall landscape.

If you want to take your fall landscaping to the next level. Consider adding some of the following plants that add color with their foliage and flowers that hold up to the cooler temperatures heading our way.

10 Ways to Bring Color to Your Fall Landscaping

10 Ways to Bring Color to Your Fall Landscaping:

1) Chrysanthemums are a very popular fall flower that comes in a rainbow of colors and are perennials if planted well before the ground freezes to allow their root system to establish.

2) Pansy and viola add ground level color to your landscaping. They are annuals that can handle a couple of light frostings and have been known to reseed for early spring flowerings.

3) Helenium comes in deep fall colors of orange, red and yellow. These ‘cornflower’ look-alikes bloom late summer to fall. They attract butterflies and add height to your flower beds.

4) Coral Bells or heuchera is a colorful perennial that comes it a variety of shades from lime green to dark red and tolerates brisk fall weather.

5) American Beautyberry has a lot to offer spring, summer and fall. It attracts pollinators with its showy pink flowers in the warmer months and offers cluster of glossy purple berries that will attract wildlife to your garden.

6) Burning Bush, known for its fiery red color in the fall months, makes for an excellent border shrub. The plant gets tiny flowers in the early summer that turn to berries for wildlife. They are easy to care for which makes them an excellent low maintenance choice.

7) Crape Myrtle is a showy late summer flowering tree or shrub that fades in lovely muted colors in the fall. They crave full sun and require moderate watering.

8) Holly evergreen shrubs offer glossy vibrant foliage year round, but they come alive in the fall with their abundant offering of red berries that feed wildlife throughout the winter months. They are very drought tolerant and grow well in full sun or partial shade.

9) Fire Power Nandina is an evergreen shrub that keeps its leafy foliage year round. This shrub turns a fiery red in the fall and offers a colorful backdrop to any landscaping. Easy to grow in full sun or full shade, which makes it great choice for any location.

10) Snapdragons add a vertical interest, come in a large range of colors and bloom in a fall landscape up to the first hard freeze.

Finally, with an abundance of local farms, many landscapers take their fall landscaping efforts to the next level by adding fall crops, such as pumpkins, gourds, hay bales and dried corn to ornament their yards.
